after passing out at 3 AM, waking up at 6 AM is not fun and games.
BUT...once again, language to the rescue! the word of the day makes me happy:

scuttlebutt \SKUHT-l-buht\, noun:

1. A drinking fountain on a ship.
2. A cask on a ship that contains the day's supply of drinking water.
3. Informal. Gossip; rumor.

Dear Rocco Kayiatos:

CAN WE PLEASE TOUCH EACH OTHER?!

You're funny, engaging, kind, great with words, and just soooo friendly.
And SMART.
And queer.
And really attractive.

Love,
Aida

Sore, tired, bruised, excited,
amused, nervous, surprised.

What a weekend.

P.S. I closed my QACC sticky note. UGH. All my info and plans for this year and Head-Chairing = now lost. FML.

current musical obsessions

Posted on 2009.08.20 at 17:29
Tags:
  • Death Cab for Cutie's "Narrow Stairs" album (especially "Grapevine Fires," bloody spectacular)
  • Metric
  • La Roux's song "In For The Kill"
  • The Black-Eyed Peas album "The E.N.D."
  • Yael Naim
  • MGMT's "Oracular Spectacular" (especially Electric Feel and The Youth)
  • Blue Foundation
  • Brightblack Morning Light (yes, still loving them hardcore)

So I'm currently reading 4 different translations of the Tao Te Ching (Mitchell, Susuki, Goddard, and Legge). This is, er, Part I in my Spirituality & Religion Reading Series? Well, I just made that title up, but I've been meaning to read a bunch of religious texts, so that works. People who don't know me well enough might think that I hate religion or that I'm an atheist (remember: this is people who don't know me well at ALL...or are dumb), but the fact is, religions and spirituality fascinate me, so it's time I got cracking on some texts. Here's my list for now:
  • A Buddhist Bible by Dwight Goddard
  • Discordian works (The Principia Discordia, The Illuminatus! Trilogy, the Principia Discordia, and the Apocrypha Discordia)
  • The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster by Bobby Henderson
  • The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey
  • Chuang-Tzu/Zhuangzi by Zhuangzi (2 translations: Legge and Nina Correa)
  • The Spirits' Book (and probably The Book on Mediums, too) by Allan Kardec
  • The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels
  • The Qur'an (have yet to decide on an edition, but I might just read it through the Online Quran Project here)
  • Bhagavad-gita: As It Is by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
  • The Tao Te Ching (4 translations: Mitchell, Susuki, Goddard, and Legge)
  • The Message Remix (Bible in Contemporary Language) by Eugene H. Peterson
  • Holy Bible: The New Revised Standard Version Bible with Apocrypha by NRSV Bible Translation Committee & and Bruce M. Metzger  [this one has gender-inclusive language, so that's awesome]
  • The Essential Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks
  • Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey Into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism, David Pinchbeck ((and a bunch of other books about shamanism and psychedelics, but this is the one Ben Colburn wanted to focus on, so this is the one I'm listing officially for now))
Obviously I'm not going to finish reading all these ANY time soon, but...this is my list. The only ones I own or have on hand are the "Remix" bible (a very religious classmate offered to give them as gifts to anyone who wanted one, and I totally signed up), the Bhagavad Gita, and all these editions of the TTC (thanks, internet!). The rest I can either borrow from friends or purchase myself. :) So that takes care of that.

Anyway. I'm making notes and thinkin' hard, and I will definitely comment later on what I've learned and/or thought about the Tao Te Ching, BUT I just had to highlight something right now:

Wu wei

Ohhhhhh, and the collective lulz ensue.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

P.S. If any of you are interested in my literary going-ons (i.e. what I'm reading, what I've read, what I own, and what I want to read), check me out on GoodReads. It's a fantastic site. :)

I have such a big appreciation for Family Guy. Fucking genius.
Also, gotta love Law & Order: SVU. I finally caught it after having missed it a few times.
There are more shows I appreciate, but I just finished watching those two, so I wanted to mention 'em. :)

Now, some shows on my "to watch" list:
  • Big Love
  • Drop Dead Diva
  • Pushing Daisies
  • True Blood
  • Weeds
  • Dexter
  • Skins

Gina Lash (from Angela Anaconda)

Angela's best friend, Gina Lash, is the smartest child in her grade. Possessing encyclopedic knowledge and an impressive vocabulary, Gina routinely dispenses reason and insight to her friends—although she will participate in whatever crazy scheme her friends are cooking up. Gina shares many interests with her friends, but her thirst for knowledge has led her to pursue a variety of other hobbies; she owns a microscope and other scientific paraphernalia. Gina is best known for her appetite, which rivals that of any adult. She is always hungry and can even fall prey to Nanette Manoir if she is bribed with her gourmet chef's cooking. Gina’s favorite foods include Abatti's Pizza, cinnamon swirls and Tastee Swirl ice cream. Gina worships the mascot for Tastee Swirl, a man with a whipped ice cream head who dispenses ice creams from his truck, and Tiny Dottie Cake. Despite being rather overweight, Gina does not let jibes about her appearance affect her, remaining happy and confident. Gina lives with her mother, who is single (until she begins dating a rather buff co-worker.) Her father is never mentioned on the show. Gina also owns a pet turtle called Sheldon who eats a lot of carrots.

That...um...fits me way too well. Furthermore, guess who has a huge crush on her? Yes. Gordy.

Gordy is a sensitive and effeminate boy with asthma who prefers pressing flowers, housework and writing poetry to "dangerous" activities like tag or hide and seek. Gordy, who wears large, square spectacles, is skinny and physically weak; the complete opposite of his burly ex-Army dad Coach Reinhardt. Despite being so unalike, their father/son relationship is very strong and they show genuine love and concern for one another. The Coach enjoys the strawberry souffles, hand-embroidered towels and pillow cases Gordy makes in his free time. Gordy loves animals and is the proud owner of an immaculately groomed dog called Fabio. He is an expert on pet care and worries about the welfare of any animal entrusted to Angela. Gordy spent almost an entire episode wearing rubber gloves and a face mask, refusing to leave his house, after looking at an eyelash under a microscope. In spite of Gordy's outward appearance and mannerisms, he is deeply in love with Gina Lash, but his love is never returned.

Awww. Cuteness. I'd probably get exasperated with him, though. Quelle surprise. This lady needs a Gordy with a dominant streak--a splash of dominance and fun and excitement. This is why I'm a switch in every sense of the word, man. I need both sides of the coin. Obviously I'm more dominant than submissive, but I prefer to not ALWAYS be dominant, y'know? I could see relationships where I was fully "one role" working out if I were poly, but if I were monogamous, the only way I'd be properly fulfilled is if I were involved with someone switchy leaning toward the sub side and/or a feisty sub. Otherwise...I think I'd be bored.

Belle from Disney, cut because everyone knows about her anyway... )

And did you SEE that library she got by shacking up with Beast? Holy balls. I'd give anything for one like that!

Blossom (from The Powerpuff Girls)

http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Powerpuff-Girls-cn07.jpg

Blossom (voiced by Cathy Cavadini) is "the smart one" and self-proclaimed leader of the Powerpuff Girls. Her signature color is pink, and she has long orange hair with a red bow. She was named for having spoken freely and honestly to the Professor shortly after her creation. She is often seen as the most mature, level-headed and composed member of the group, although she can also be fussy, overbearing, vain, and overly analytical at times. She tends to "parent" Bubbles and Buttercup, and often tries to play peacemaker between the two if they fight (though she is very quick to argue with Buttercup). In the episode "Ice Sore," she showed the ability to blow ice, and at the end, blow fire. However, even though Blossom said her ice breath was "all used up", she has been seen using it frequently in later episodes.

Seriously. Think of Sara and Lyndsey and me as The Powerpuff Girls (Buttercup, Bubbles, and Blossom respectively). It's uncanny how accurate it all is.

A. "Where have you been all my life?"

B. "For most of it, not born yet."
